  • Step 1

    To prepare this this sattvik dish, we will start with preparing the lentil balls(toor dal balls). First, take toor dal and wash it under running water. Then, transfer the dal in a medium sized bowl and pour good amount of water in it. Also, add green chillies and red chillies in the bowl. Soak the dal for at least 2 hours.

  • Step 2

    Once done, drain the entire water from the bowl. Then, transfer the soaked dal, green chillies and red chillies in a mixer-grinder jar. Next, add asafoetida, curry leaves in the jar. Also, add salt as required. Now, blend them all on maximum speed until you get a smooth and fine paste. Make sure you do not add water, as we need thick texture and consistency for preparation of lentil balls. Transfer the prepared paste to a bowl.

  • Step 3

    Next, add rice powder in the prepare dal paste and mix well. Then, start rolling out medium sized balls from the prepared mixture. Once done, keep aside.

  • Step 4

    Now, take a medium sized pan and place it on high flame. Then, pour and heat good amount of water in it. Now, add tamarind paste in the water. Also, add salt as required. Once the water is hot enough, transfer the prepared dal balls(step 3) in water carefully. Give it a boil or two and then turn the flame to medium-low heat. Next, add mashed toor dal in the pan and let it simmer for next 5 minutes until cooked.

  • Step 5

    Next, take a separate small sized pan and place it on low flame. Then, heat and pour vegetable oil in it. Once the oil is hot enough, add mustard seeds along with curry leaves in it. Cook until the seeds start to splutter and turn the flame off.

    Lastly, transfer the cooked dal(step 4) in a serving dish. Pour the prepared seasoning over(step 5) it and serve hot.
