Homemade Dal Makhani Recipe

To prepare this yummy dish, soak urad dal or the black grams along with red kidney beans for about 8 hours or overnight.

Next, cut the onion, tomato, ginger and garlic separately in bowls. Then, put a pressure cooker on medium flame and add the half the portion of chopped ginger and garlic in it, and add the soaked urad dal and rajma in it as well.

Close the lid of the pressure cooker and turn the flame to high, and pressure cook both the dals for about five to six whistles. Or, cook till rajma becomes soft when pressed. (Note: It needed 6 whistles to cook rajma softly.) Once done, drain the excess water and keep it for further usage.

Now, put a thick-bottomed pan or a kadhai on medium flame and melt butter in it. Next, add cumin seeds in the pan and let them splutter for a few things.

Then, add the remaining ginger-garlic in the pan and saute for a minute till the raw smell goes away. Then, add chopped onions in the kadhai and fry till they turn light brown and translucent.

Once the onion and garlic is cooked, add the chopped tomatoes in the pan and fry till they turn mushy. Then, add turmeric powder, salt, red chilli powder, and garam masala powder in the kadhai, and cook all the spices.

After 2-3 minutes, add the cooked urad dal and rajma with water in the kadhai and cook till the aroma comes out. Cook dal makhani on low to medium flame for about 15 to 20 minutes.

Once the desired consistency is reached, garnish with fresh cream and switch off the burner. Serve hot smoky homemade dal makhani with plain kulcha, roti or naan.
